Bio: 
Born in Reno, Nevada, in 1941 but raised, after the Second World War, in the high Sierra Nevada of California, he entered Utah State University in 1959 and graduated in botany with a bachelor’s in 1963 and a master’s degree in 1965 before going to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, for his doctorate in botany and a minor in western American history in 1969. After spending 30 years at the University of Maryland, he retired and moved to Montrose, Colorado, only to be appointed an adjunct professor at Cornell University in 2007. An author of more than 500 scientific books and articles mainly on floristics, botanical explorations and discoveries, and nomenclature, he remains actively involved in research and teaching.
